Atwater Market

History

Following the stock market crash of 1929, the federal government launched major public works projects to stimulate the economy. As part of this effort, many public markets were built in Montreal, including Atwater market, completed in 1933 on the site of the former Saint Antoine Market and a former basin of the Lachine Canal. In addition to operating as a farmer's market, it served a variety of political, military, social, and sports purposes: speeches by Mayor Camilien Houde, food warehouse for soldiers during the Second World War, industrial exhibitions, wrestling matches. In 1968, the City closed the market with plans to convert it into a recreation centre. Public protests caused it to rethink the plan, and the market was re-opened in 1982 after improvements had been made. Further renovations, repairs, and adaptations were carried out in 1989 and 1993. The ground and first floors - large pillar-free areas - are used by merchants. The second floor currently houses a gym; and the fourth-floor mezzanine is taken up by administrative offices.

Today, the market is frequented primarily by city-centre residents, although it also attracts people from all over the region in search of fresh, high-quality produce.
