One of the oldest middle-class francophone neighbourhoods in Montreal.
Today's Plateau Mont-Royal preserves traces of one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Montreal, the La Fontaine district. The name, although no longer in common use for the neighbourhood, is perpetuated by La Fontaine Park, commemorating Sir Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine, former Prime Minister and renowned French-Canadian politician from the 1840s.
In addition to beautiful La Fontaine Park, many other heritage treasures are to be found within the borders of this historic preserve of the French-Canadian bourgeoisie. It is well worth a leisurely visit.
